"The gods envy us. They envy us because we’re mortal, because any moment may be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we’re doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again."

Poseidon And The Nereids by Friedrich Ernst Wolfrom (1857-1923)

The role of the Nereids in Greek mythology.

Many of the major gods of the Ancient Greek pantheon are well known, and most people will know of the likes of Zeus and Hermes. In the Pantheon though there were thousands of deities, many of whose names are unrecognisable today. Many of these names are those linked to water, as in Greek mythology every water source had a deity associated with it. These water deities included the likes of Oceanus and Poseidon, the Potamoi, the Oceanids, the Naiads and the Nereids.

Ancient sources would normally say that there were 3,000 Potamoi and 3,000 Oceanids, but the Nereids were thought to number only 50.

The Nereids were the daughters of the sea god Nereus, and his wife, the Oceanid Doris. Said to be extremely beautiful young maidens, in antiquity, the Nereids would normally be depicted playing with any of the creatures found beneath the sea. Occasionally they would also be depicted as mermaids.

As daughters of the Nereus, the Nereids were primarily associated with the Mediterranean Sea, and more specifically the Aegean; and it was beneath this surface of the Aegean that the Nereids would reside in their father’s palace.

These sea nymphs were regarded as benevolent and were said to assist sailors and fishermen, and as a result, most ports of Ancient Greece would have a shrine dedicated to the Nereids.
